Reflecting on the first year of motherhood and why I’ve started this substack, as I attempt making my great-grandmother Eleanora’s chocolate cake to celebrate my son’s first birthday. I also share cherished memories of my grandmother Mimi cooking in her kitchen, which provided the magic ingredients of my childhood: sugar, butter, flour (and a whole lot of olive oil).
The takeaway: even when you follow all of the prescribed steps to make the perfect “recipe” as you begin a new stage of life, sometimes you just need a little more time to bake before you’re feeling ready to receive whatever might come next.
